Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach, California
As you walk in, The great gathering space was organized around an existing concrete table. I added brightly painted bistro chairs. I love the diamond-paned windows, which provide a fun architectural backdrop to this outdoor area. The living room is a true living space for a large multi-generational family. Bold, deep sofas and pillows in blue and white exude a crisp, nautical feel. The sofa with nailheads—“Sussex,” from Barclay Butera Home—is upholstered in white canvas and raffia, giving it a punchy two-tone quality, like a pair of spectator shoes—a fun take on a furniture basic. The sofa behind it is a blue velvet “Sussex” sectional. Reflective surfaces and glass accents contribute to the room’s appeal. A pair of sofas in deep oceanic blue provides a visual anchor to an otherwise light and airy open room. “Claire” ottomans from Barclay Butera Home introduce a touch of animal print. The lamp shade fabric and Chinese export porcelain continue the blue and white color story. By installing tile on the floor, I pressed the walkway into service as an ad hoc mudroom for sandy feet and wet bathing suits. Additionally, multiple cubbyholes of woven wicker baskets convert the space into a storage area. Storage is at a premium at the beach. A soothing order is achieved in the master bedroom by the blending and layering of texture, pattern, and color: navy and white stripes, geometrics of blue and cream, woven raffia furnishings, and a floor clad in diamondweave sisal. Floral pillows and an upholstered ottoman bring a tropical feeling into the room. And a belt of windows provides expansive views all around.
